Endowment Management

cimg0144Endowments built to benefit the Missoula Community Foundation and the Missoula area are managed by the Montana Community Foundation. This partnership provides access to professional, active management of our funds.

Missoula Community Foundation assets become part of a much larger pool of funds. Our money is actively managed by institutional investors.  Investment decisions are directed by an investment policy, which reflects compliance with Montana law, understanding of financial markets, and the responsibility to protect and grow principal and to provide for annual distributions.  Our investment goals over the long term are:

  • Inflation plus 5.5 percent
  • Exceed the benchmark on a risk adjusted basis
  • Perform well against peers

The Montana Community Foundation provides rigorous investment oversight. Beginning with a professionally informed investment policy, it uses the services of an independent third-party consultant to evaluate investment performance against benchmarks and other foundation peers. Quarterly, the Finance/Investment Committee reviews detailed performance analyses with the consultant and at that time considers necessary changes in allocation, diversification, and managers. The full-time staff also watches performance and is responsible for rebalancing the assets according to board-established allocation guidelines.
