headwaters1Grantmaking at the Missoula Community Foundation is a thoughtful process. We carefully assess community needs, research existing programs, identify gaps in services, and evaluate non-profit management. We believe that non-profit organizations are one cornerstone of a vibrant civic society.

Community is more than a geographic location; it is an idea that exists in the minds of people sharing common goals and concerns. Based on that belief, the Foundation’s grantmaking programs seek to develop a shared vision of building a sense of community.

2017 Grant Recipients

This year we have a little more than $8000 to award in grants. The Board of Directors has devised creative ways to distribute a portion of the funds in a manner that spreads the joy of giving and encourages people to donate to their community and favorite causes all year long and all life long.

1. Missoula Gives: $2000 of our grant funds will go to the prize pool for nonprofits taking part in  Missoula Gives.

2. Missoula Project for Nonprofit Excellence (MPNE): $1000 of our funds are helping strengthen local nonprofits by connecting them with consultants who can help them move to the next level of organizational effectiveness.

3. Friends of the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula: $1000 has been allocated to support a community fundraising assessment for a capital campaign to restore the recently acquired T-1 Building.

4. Roxy ReDeco Project: We have pledged $5000 over two years (2017 & 2018) to support this effort to restore the exterior of the classic Art Deco theater.

5. Freedom on the Inside: $1000 has been allocated to support this great rehabilitation program that offers weekly yoga classes inside the Missoula County Jail. The funds will be used for printing of educational pamphlets for inmates, new yoga mats and training for the volunteer instructors.
